Parish & Ward Church of St. Botolph without Bishopsgate

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday

Tomorrow, 6 March, is Ash Wednesday, when we begin our Lenten journey. This year we have three services with ashing - in addition to the main lunchtime Choral Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes at 1.10pm, when the Choir will sing Lenten music by William Byrd, there are shorter services of Imposition of Ashes at 8.15am and 5.15pm. Fr David will also be available for ashing on request outside these service times.

Fr David writes:
Lent should be an intensely personal time in terms of our relationship with God. We are encouraged to look inward, to examine more closely our faith and seek to strengthen it in our understanding of the love of God. To do so necessitates a humbling of ourselves before God. One of the most humbling times of Lent comes right at the beginning with the service on Ash Wednesday and the imposition of ashes. At this service, as I make the sign of the cross on each person’s forehead, I repeat the words: Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return. There is nothing more humbling than publicly recognising our mortality; you are most welcome to join the experience. Fr David
